Question: I see a red wire hanging for a hole in my attic, should I touch it?

Answer: No

The red wire for in electrical outlet is usually a second live wire. It allows one of the two outlets to be operated by a switch in a room. The red wire also supplies power to the other outlet when the switch is in the ‘on’ position.

It carries current and therefore it could be” HOT” don’t touch it without making sure the power is off.

Electrical outlet boxes have three wires: a black wire which is the positive electric current, a white neutral wire, and a green wire. Some boxes also have a red wire with is a second positive live wire, usually used for 220 volt devices.

Keeping Your Generator Running

Generator Maintenance

A generator has many purposes. These purposes include providing emergency power for your home, regulate life-support equipment, provide power in remote areas, and it can even reduce your electricity costs (this is called peak-shaving). However, regular maintenance checks ensure that when you do actually need it, it will function as require.

  • Service the generator twice yearly.
  • Keep a record book of service and any issues found and fixed.
  • Look for corroded elements, loose wires, stuck buttons, etc. Check for any loose connections and frayed wiring. Keep the area around the generator clean, and if the generator has sucked in any dirt or leaves make sure to clean out the area.
  • Fix anything loose, stuck, or fraying
  • Check the distilled water in the battery; top up if needed, and replace your battery every 2-3 years.
  • Change the lubricant oil and filters (super, by-pass, etc.
  • Clean the spark plugs and replace them yearly.
  • Check the bolts, Piston and Gasket head; replace if worn or cracked
  • Check the fuel
  • Start up the generator regularly, at least every six months if not used on a regular basis

Keep your home, family and generator in working order, with regular maintenance. It’s worth it.

Fall is in the air!  The colder, darker days are just around the corner. During the fall and winter months we use our lights, kitchens and host more indoor activities due to the fact that the outdoor temperatures have dropped.

If your wiring is older than 15 yrs, or you simply need to make some upgrades to the current system, this is the best time to get a FREE inspection. We will check everything from the breaker box to each outlet.

Maintenance of your electrical system may not be something you ever consider. Yet over time this un-seen member of you family, suffers wear and tear and becomes worn and outdated. It’s now less efficient, less dependable and may become a fire hazard. Don’t assume your wiring is ready to handle the upcoming winter months. At the very least, you may be spending too much on electrical bills. Why not make sure you are at your most efficient?
